Jack Gellerstedt's new 'old' Banjo.

Jack recently completed a banjo inspired by banjos of the middle 19th Century. The neck and tailpiece are cherry, the rim is steam-bent red oak, the pegs are hand carved from hard maple, and the finish is hand rubbed TruOil. He made all the parts, including the steam-bent rim and all the brass parts except the bracket shoes and nuts.

Like banjos of that period it has only eight brackets, and the head is animal skin. In place of gut strings that were then used, this banjo uses nylon strings that emulate the sound of gut strings. This banjo is used to play music typical of the music that was played on the banjo in the 1800's, and the normal pitch to which it is tuned is five half-steps below that used on modern banjos.
